Jill Scott was born in 1972 in North Philadelphia. She grew up in the ghetto with her mother and grandmother, who describes her as a deeply loved and gifted child, she learned to talk at just eight months old and was reading by the age of four. She quickly gained the nickname of 'Little Butterfly' as she would always be center of attention in every situation. In school, she would use melodies to help to memorize with her learning. It is very clear that Jill Scott had a deep connection with music from the bottom of her soul.
Encouraged by Jazzy Jeff from hip-hop group 'The Roots', Scott began to get into songwriting and crafted some beautiful tunes within just 3 days of the summer of 1999. One of them, titled "You Got Me," was later performed by Erykah Badu (another queen of the neo-soul movement) and The Roots, and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance!
Almost instantly, Jill Scott signed a record deal with Hidden Beach as a solo singer and has been smashing out the grooves ever since. Collaborating with numerous artists such as Will Smith, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def and many more.
Her most mainstream tracks include: 'A Long Walk' released in 2001, off of her debut studio album, 'Who Is Jill Scott?', the song hit no. 9 on Billboards R&B Singles chart.
Jill Scott's sound infuses jazz, R&B, spoken word, and hip hop to create her distinctive 'songbird' neo-soul style. Her music evokes the feeling of a beautiful hot city summer's day…
